Sickle cell anemia Abstract Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized primarily by chronic anemia and periodic episodes of pain. The underlying problem involves hemoglobin, a component of red blood cells. Damage to the retina can be serious enough to cause blindness. D- Yellowing of skin and eyes: These are signs of jaundice, resulting from rapid breakdown of red blood cells. Delayed growth and puberty in children and often a slight build in adults: The slow rate of growth is caused by a shortage of red blood cells 4- Complications A-Infections: In general, both children and adults with sickle cell anemia are more liable to infections and have a harder time fighting them off. This is the result of spleen damage from sickle red cells, hence preventing the spleen from destroying bacteria in the blood. Also the bone marrow gets enlarged because of the increasing need to produce red blood cells. Infants and young children especially are suspectible to bacterial infections that can kill them in as little as 9 hours from onset of fever. This test is performed at the same time and from the same blood samples as other routine newborn-screening tests. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is the most widely used diagnostic test. C-Hydroxyurea The first effective drug treatment for adults with severe sickle cell anemia was reported in early 1995, when a study conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute showed that daily doses of the anticancer drug hydroxyurea reduced the frequency of painful crises and acute chest syndrome. Patients taking the drug needed less blood transfusions. Regular health maintenance is critical for people with sickle cell anemia. Proper nutrition, good hygiene, bed rest, protection against infections, and avoidance of other stresses all are important in maintaining good health and preventing complications. Regular visits to a physician or clinic that provides comprehensive care are necessary to identify early changes in the patients health and ensure immediate treatment. Today, with good health care, many people with sickle cell anemia are in reasonably good health much of the time and living productive lives. This creates a ritual – a series of actions or type of behavior regularly and invariably followed – 5 of death for the play and therefore the killing of Macbeth, which has been established as not being dark as it ushered out his tyrannical rule, complicates that ritual. This complication relates to the point raised in paragraph two, whereby it can be seen that the complica tion itself exists for the improvement of the play as a spectacle.For example, Macbeth might have been murdered by his wife so that she may gain power, instead of by Macadam to restore order. This complication of the ritual of death is also evident in Romeo and Juliet whereby he deaths prior to Romeo and Gullet's come as a result of the feud between the Montague and the Capsules. Romeo and Gullet's death does not come out of that feud but out of love for each other. This was similarly the case in Macbeth, as his death came not out of self-gain or self-preservation, but out of necessity for the kingdom of Scotland.Their death (Romeo and Juliet) ultimately stops the rivalry between the two families, as Machete's death stopped the war and his rule. In both instances, we see the final death in a contrasting light to preceding deaths, with an equally contrasting effect. Naturally, the role of Shakespeare as the author is significant as the protagonists themselves shaped their deaths in b oth Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. Not only did they create the figurative space which allowed for them to die, but also the literal space where they died was of their own creation.Shakespearean role in this could be more direct than it initially appears. It draws substantially from the context of the period and place, when and where his plays were originally performed. Romeo and Juliet was first stages at the Theatre', which was in an area described as being, â€Å"less object to London Jurisdictions†, 6 and this therefore allowed for Shakespearean creativity to blossom – Shakespeare later moved to the Globe, in an area described as a â€Å"fairly lawless environment†. Shakespeare staging his plays away from the gaze of effort and this has been translated into the tragic genre. In Macbeth, Macbeth seems to go increasingly further out of his realm of what is acceptable and what is not and his actions appear Juxtaposed to his character – this is evident in his internal struggle to kill King Duncan, â€Å"We will proceed no further in this business/ He hath moored me of late†. 8 One could perceive this as Macbeth leaving the Jurisdiction of his former self into one that is more, for want of a better word, evil.One sees Macbeth becoming increasingly lawless and does things regardless of authority – the fact that he is king does not mean that he should not respect other forms authority. In this regard, Macbeth – as well as Romeo and Juliet, who do so more directly – creates his own space of death, contrasting to the deaths preceding his own e. G. King Duncan was murdered in his bed. Contrasting this, Macbeth actively creates the environment he finds himself in when he loses his life by virtue of wanting to remain king.This is also seen in Romeo and Juliet whereby the love of both main characters sees them willingly choose to meet in the Capsule tomb, which has significance as two youths from both families lost their lives prematurely in a place in existence in order to remember the dead – the death of Romeo and Juliet however, is something both families would rather forget (and this ultimately sees the feud come to an end). This complicates the space of death, for we are lead to believe n both plays that death does not have a set space. However in both plays, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet set their space of death up on their own accord.These instances are when Macbeth, along with his wife, decides to kill King Duncan and when Romeo and Juliet decide to run away. In conclusion, it can be seen from the points raised that the ritual of death is complicated through Shakespearean insertion of the final, perhaps most important death at the end of his tragedies. This final death is contrasted to the deaths that precede it through factors such as motive, repercussions and space. The issue of space and its complication draws its roots from the actual staging of Shakespearean plays on the ou tskirts of London, where the law had less influence.Figurative comparisons can be drawn from this as one could relate Shakespearean willingness to be away from or above the law to the protagonists in the two plays. What is wholly evident though, is that similarly with death, the notion of space does not remain constant throughout the play. Macbeth, who can be considered the false king, being killed in the castle whereas King Duncan, the true and original king, being killed in he bed of another man raises the issue of space and how Macbeth created his own and King Duncan did not.

It is revisited several times, and is never taken lightly for the most†¦show more content†¦From the start of the book till the end you can tell that many of the customs the people practice and preach are very backwards and hypocritical. The society is depicted as a bunch of concepts that d efy logic. This flawed logic appears early in the novel, when the new judge allows Pap to receive custody of Huck not thinking about the welfare of the boy only that Pap has â€Å"rights† to his son being his biological father. At the same time Twain is bringing up the fact that this legal system puts the rights of a white man and his â€Å"property† or slave over the welfare of a black man. Twain is comparing Huck being forced to go with Pap to the fact that white slave owners forced black men and women into slave labor. Twain implies that it is impossible for a society that owns slaves to be just, no matter how â€Å"civilized† that society believes and proclaims itself to be. However, Huck Finn eventually shows that by the end of the novel that he has matured morally through his interactions and shared experiences with runaway slave Jim and reaches Stage 6 of Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory whereas at the start of the novel he was at Stage 1. Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory is a belief started by John Kohlberg that ranks the stage of morality that a human has based on social interactions from stages of 1 to 6. It has been said to be the greatest American novel in history thus far. However, it is also one -if not the- most controversial works of literature to be taught in school curriculum. There are a few controversies surrounding Twain’s novel, including racism, sexism, and the overall conclusion of the book. The biggest controversy that the novel poses, however, is the ostensible racism throughout the story. A few things that need to be called to mind before any further discussion are that Twain did, in fact, spend his entire young life in a well-to-do family that owned a good number of slaves and the world that he was living in while composing his novel still struggled with the repercussions of slavery and a racist society. There is a double standard that is institutionally enforced in our society that condemns white individuals that use derogatory and â€Å"racial ly charged† slang, but does not likewise condemn African Americans who use the same rhetoric. In this novel, the mind represents a deformed conscience, but the heart is pure; the main figure in the story, Huckleberry, â€Å"Huck†, possess both characteristics. Among the many topics to debate within the novel, the question of whether this story is ruled by hope or cynicism determines the way the novel is read and interpreted. Although there are examples of lightness in this novel, Twain writes this novel with a predominantly dark mindset of humanity. He shows it through the the obtuseness and violence of humans through the Grangerfords, and materialistic ideals of the King and Duke and what they stand for; these characters represent major character flaws that are prominent in the entirety of the human race. He displays these characters in such a way, showing how common these vices are, and how they can appear in anyone. All of thes e dark character flaws seem tempting at first, Huck, a light character, always tries to escape them and the darkness of society. There is no denying that the most prominent examples of hope of light within this novel are Huck and the river.
